As part of our strategic focus on sistering with other organizations, we are partnering Capital Diaper Bank to spearhead a diaper drive at Nurture’s Birth & Baby Fair on May 7. Capital Diaper Bank provided more than 1.5 million diapers and served over 7,000 families in crisis in 2015. Stephanie Spencer is Director of Health Services with Capital Diaper Bank and the Founder of Urban Baby Beginnings

What drew you to the field you’re in?
I became a registered nurse because I have a genuine desire to care for children.
What part of your daily work inspires you the most?
I’m inspired by the love I receive when families experience a breakthrough and find joy in the midst of a crisis.
How can RVA keep moving forward as a great place to grow a family?
Through collaborative initiatives such as Capital Diaper Bank, RVA will continue to empower families to become self-sufficient.
If you could share one piece of wisdom with families or professionals who serve them, what would it be?
One thing rings true for all families: a desire to provide the best environment and care for their child. As professionals, we have a responsibility to educate and empower our families regardless of their ability to pay. I remind new parents who may be struggling through a crisis that there is hope, support and love in the community. They must find the strength to ask for help.

Tell us about one of your favorite accomplishments.
Through our Urban Baby Beginnings program and the diaper bank, we are proud to have provided education and support to over 7,000 families in Central Virginia and Hampton Roads during 2015. But there is still so much more to do. Through collaborative partnerships in 2016, our goal is to continue to reach more families and help them change their lives.
